The Committee for a Workers International (CWI) in Lebanon calls for worker's unity and an end to war and poverty, as part of the struggle for a socialist society.
For decades, the working people of Lebanon have suffered terribly due to capitalism and the policies of local capitalist powers and imperialism.
The working people of Lebanon desperately need a mass socialist movement to break the cycle of neo-liberal policies (e.g. the high cost of living, unemployment, poverty and low wages), as well as the real danger of conflict, military invasion, wars and civil war.
Working people and youth need a united movement to oppose the bosses, the forces of sectarian division, including confessional-based parties.
In the workplace and local communities, working people need to be independently-organised, through democratically elected cross-confessional and multi-ethnic committees and genuine independent trade unions, which promote and fight for the class interests of workers, the poor, youth and the oppressed.
The masses liberation can only be fought for through a mass workers party that can stand in opposition to the corrupt governing parties, which only serve the interest of the bosses the capitalist class nationally and internationally. Such a party can achieve the unity of the working class and poor through demanding rights which help solve common daily problems and which call for an end to sectarianism, which is spawned by the capitalist system of poverty, joblessness and want.
The bosses and the capitalist class use divide and rule methods to help stay in power. A democratic socialist society is necessary to cut across such divisions, once and for all.
We call for
- A minimum wage of one million Lira
- Properly funded and free state education
- Decent funding to hospitals, for free health services
- Affordable energy sources
- A national economic plan, drawn up and carried out by working people, to benefit all society
- Workers unity around a class programme to end war and poverty
- Democratic, fighting and genuinely independent trade unions
- For the building of a mass workers party, with bold socialist parties
- Solidarity with striking workers in Egypt, and with the working class throughout the region.
- For class unity against neo-liberalism, local despotic regimes and imperialism
- End all meddling by local capitalist powers and imperialism in Lebanon.
- For the Lebanese working class, poor and youth to unite in mass struggle to determine their future.
- For a socialist Lebanon, as part of a voluntary socialist federation of the Middle East
