Socialist Alternative, the United States section of the Committee for a Workers' International, has been at the forefront of the movement to build the Labor Party since our founding in 1986, playing a key role in the formation of the Labor Party in 1996.
We have also been on the cutting edge of the growing anti-capitalist movement. This new movement began when approximately 50,000 protestors shut down the World Trade Organization (WTO) conference in Seattle. The Seattle branch of Socialist Alternative, for example, launched the coalition against the WTO at the University of Washington, mobilizing 2000 students who joined the WTO protests. Socialist Alternative also participated in the demonstrations against the meetings of the IMF and World Bank in Washington DC as well as the Republican and Democratic National Conventions.
The new protest movement also rallied behind independent pro-worker, anti-corporate candidate Ralph Nader for President of the United States. Socialist Alternative was the first socialist organization to endorse Nader, the only one to foresee that Nader's campaign represented an historic opportunity to damage the two-party political system and advance the struggle for independent working class politics. Socialist Alternative strove to be the most effective builders of the Nader campaign, while simultaneously promoting working class and socialist politics to explain the limitations of Ralph Nader and the Green Party ticket that he ran on.
In San Francisco Socialist Alternative has played a leading role in the immigrant rights movement. We are currently organizing a campaign "Papers for All!" which fights for immediate and unconditional amnesty for all undocumented immigrants in the US. The San Francisco branch of Socialist Alternative has also played the central role in organizing the "Progressive Left Slate" which has run independent working class candidates for local office in San Francisco, regularly receiving between 7% - 30% in numerous local races.
Throughout all these campaigns, Socialist Alternative is dedicated to building a powerful socialist movement to overthrow capitalism and US imperialism from inside the belly of the beast.
