The incoming Trump Presidency, from the vicious tweets to the bizarre press conferences to the reactionary cabinet picks and executive orders, has millions of people understandably feeling they are in an unfolding nightmare. People fear a man who has glorified sexual assault, incited racist violence and made billions of dollars off the backs of working people.

Russia: Duma legislates to decriminalise domestic violence

For unified struggle for women’s rights and against capitalism. 
Socialist alternative, the Russian section of the CWI, took part in an “individual picket” outside the State Duma (Parliament) on 17th January to protest against the first reading to remove from the criminal code the article making domestic violence a crime. As soon as the change was announced, a shockwave swept through social networks. The “individual picket” – now the only form of protest that does not need official permission from the state – is intended as a precursor to a larger protest.

Côte d’Ivoire is currently going through a period of heavy social turmoil. The year had started well for the ruling regime, with the anouncement of an expected 8 % GDP growth for 2017 (the highest in Africa this year), and the formation of a new government. This was the first government under the brand new “Third Republic” after the adoption of a new Constitution in November 2016.

US: CWI joins protests around the world against Trump

Donald Trump’s inauguration saw millions take to the streets of cities across the US and worldwide, on Friday 20 January, and especially on Saturday 21st. Among the biggest mass marches in US history, the dozens of international ‘Women’s marches’ against Trump on 21 January may have been the biggest single coordinated world day of protest since the movement against the Iraq war in 2003.
