Britain: Corbyn’s Labour can defeat Tories with socialist programme

“If this Tory parody of a government is so shambolic, so chronically divided, so utterly directionless, then why no astronomical Labour lead in the polls?” Owen Jones askedin the Guardian on 29 November.

He then remembered that in April, when May triggered the snap general election – partially because she and the Blairites hoped and expected that Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour was facing electoral oblivion – a small Labour lead would have been seen in a positive light.

La creciente represión y autoritarismo en Hong Kong ha impactado al mundo. El año pasado, y especialmente desde que Carrie Lam llegó a la Presidencia de Hong Kong en Julio de 2017, Hong Kong ha sufrido un tsunami de represión con el encarcelamiento de 16 activistas del movimiento en defensa de la democracia incluyendo los principales dirigentes del “Movimiento de los Paraguas” que tuvo lugar en 2014, y el cese de 6 diputados de la Asamblea de Hong Kong. La perspectiva de nuevos juicios y posiblemente sentencias de cárcel aún más duras implica que la dura lucha de Hong Kong en defensa de sus derechos democráticos está siendo aplastada en beneficio de la dictadura China, que al mismo tiempo está impulsando una ola represiva en China sin precedentes desde la represión del movimiento democrático de Tiananmén en 1989.

Finland: 100th anniversary of workers’ revolution drowned in blood

The October socialist Revolution in Russia was met with enthusiasm from workers and the oppressed around the world. Not least in neighbouring Finland which was under Russian control since 1809. It was a large principality of the Tsarist Empire, an empire which the Bolsheviks referred to as the “prison of nations”. One week after the October Revolution (which took place in early November according to today’s calendar), the Finnish workers’ movement launched a general strike and for a few days workers held power in most parts of the country.
