End global poverty, global warming and wars!

Another world is possible – A socialist world

Hundreds of thousands of G8 protesters will be in Germany demanding "poverty is made history", wars and occupations are ended, and that ‘climate change’ is reversed.

The following CWI leaflet will be distributed to thousands of G8 protesters throughout the week of demonstrations and protests, and during the alternative summit discussions and debates. CWI supporters from Germany and around Europe will argue for struggle, solidarity and internationalism, and for the transformation along socialist lines.

End global poverty
Stop global warming
End wars and exploitation

  • No to G8 world domination
  • No to imperialism and capitalism
  • Another world is possible – A socialist world

But this will not be the first protests against the G8 or the Iraq war. How do we go forward from the huge, inspiring demonstrations?

Cancel the debts

The 2005 G8 Gleneagles summit ‘deal’ on debt for the poorest countries was trumpeted as a "major breakthrough". Yet, the ‘developing world’ now pays out $13 on debt repayment for every $1 it receives in grants.

The 2005 G8 deal is an elaborate con-trick. Five hundred multinational companies dominate the globe, controlling 70% of world production. It is Utopian to imagine that these giant corporations can be convinced to show genuine "social responsibility". They are driven by the need to maximise their profits.

It is absolutely clear that making appeals to Bush, Merkel, Blair, Sarkozy, Putin, and the rest of the G8, will get us nowhere. These people are representatives of a system – capitalism – which is based on poverty, inequality, exploitation, oppression and environmental degradation.

Iraq bloodbath

Many protesters will demand an end to war and occupation in Iraq and Afghanistan. The G8 powers are the main cause of conflicts, oppression and obscene arms spending.

Between 655,000 and one million Iraqis and over 3,300 US soldiers died in Iraq since 2003.

How can the wars be ended? Only a powerful, united, working class movement in Iraq, and across the Middle East, can expel imperialism, overthrow the local dictatorships and end the oppression of the Palestinians and other nationalities. This must be allied to the worldwide anti-war movement.

Global Warming

Our environment faces destruction under capitalism. The Bush administration objects to the proposed G8 pledges to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 50% below 1990 levels by 2050. Some G8 leaders talk about ‘carbon markets’ as a way to develop technologies that are environmentally friendly. But the market system will not bring real, long-term solutions. The capitalist system is based on the unplanned, blind drive for profit. To develop alternative forms of energy – such as wind, wave, geothermal or solar power – requires cooperation and planning. It means putting the needs of humanity and the planet before profit. Some governments claim the nuclear industry is a viable "alternative". But nuclear power is extremely expensive, wasteful and can potentially kill many people.

Make capitalism history!

What is the alternative to profit-hungry system? A socialist society would meet the needs of all, by bringing the huge multinational companies that dominate our planet into democratic public ownership.

The working class, bringing with it the urban poor, small farmers and youth, can fundamentally change society. Over the last few years, countries like Italy saw the power of the organized working class, when strikes and general strikes brought society to a halt.

Today, there are many struggles in Europe and elsewhere against privatisations, wages cuts, attacks on pensions, and job losses etc., one example is the strike action by Telecom workers in Germany. These struggles to defend and improve living conditions need to be linked to the socialist change of society. Pro-capitalist supporters used the collapse of the regimes that existed in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, including the former East Germany (GDR) regime, to try to discredit any alternative to capitalism. However, while these regimes were based on a form of planned economy, they were not genuine socialist societies but bureaucratic dictatorships. Socialism means a society that is democratically run by working people for the needs of all.

The harsh reality of life under capitalism is causing the new generation to begin to move in a socialist direction.

The Committee for a Workers’ International (CWI) is an international socialist organization, fighting for the interests of working class people and youth across the globe.

Capitalism is a world system and, therefore, we need to unite workers, youth and oppressed peoples around the globe.

New parties

The working class, anti-capitalists and youth need political parties that act in their interests. The CWI in Germany (SAV) was active in the WASG (‘Electoral alternative – work and social justice’) from its foundation, calling for it to adopt fighting, socialist policies in opposition to the main big business parties. SAV supporters, including Lucy Redler, who was elected to the WASG national executive, argued against the merger of the national WASG with the PDS. With this fusion the WASG is going in the wrong direction after having had a clear position of fighting against cuts and privatisation and not wanting to participate in any government coalitions that carry out exactly those policies. The PDS has a shameful record of carrying out cuts in local government in Berlin and in the East. Many people may have hopes in the new party Die Linke, but if it goes down the same road as the PDS in Berlin and Schwerin it could end in bitter disappointment.

A genuine socialist alternative needs to be built, fighting for decent jobs, living wages, social housing and welfare. Otherwise, racist, anti-immigrant ideas can grow, and also the electoral support of the populist and far right.

We campaign for new workers’ parties and for them to adopt a socialist programme. At the same time, the CWI builds support for the ideas of revolutionary socialism.

We demand:

  • Cancel all debt, without conditions. No more hand outs to the speculators and parasitic money lenders
  • No more cuts in public services, pensions and social benefits
  • No to privatistion. Re-nationalise the public utilities that have been privatised.
  • A living minimum wage for all
  • Free education at all levels and a free health service
  • Immediate action to reverse ‘global warming’ and environmental destruction. For planned, green growth of the economy, put the needs of people and the environment first
  • Take into public ownership the commanding heights of the economy under workers’ democratic control and management.
  • For a socialist plan of production. For a socialist society and economy run to meet the needs of all, while protecting the environment.

Komitee für eine Arbeiterinternationale

Globale Verarmung beenden

Klimawandel stoppen
