Iran: Student activists arrested in Iranian regime crackdown

A large number of Iranian students have been arrested during the crackdown by the Iranian regime following the outbreak of nationwide protests in Iran. Most of the students were active in the students’ unions or in social and political campaigns.

The majority of the students were arrested at home. They were transferred to the notorious Evin prison in Tehran and some have gone on a hunger strike. Security forces have systematically started searching their homes.

In protest against the arrests, trade unions at twenty seven universities have written a letter to the Science Minister Mansour Gholami. They said the Iranian students had staged peaceful rallies in campuses to show solidarity with the protests that began on 28 December. The unions pointed to the security forces’ intervention in the rallies and arresting students later outside the universities. They have requested for the unconditional release of the arrested students.

The arrested students are:

Faezeh Abdipour, Majid Mosafer, Mohammad Khani, Siavosh Ahmadi, Mohsen Shahsavan, Sina Ghaffari (Allameh Tabtaba’i University), Leila Hosseinzadeh, SIna Rabiei, Mohsen Haqshenas, Mikaail Gholirad, Pedram Pazireh, Mohammad Mohammadian, Ali Mozaffari, Mehdi Vahabi Sani, Soheil Movahedan, Arash Avari, Danial Iman, Amir Hossoein Elmtalab, Majid Akbari, Mohsen Torabi, Kasra Nuri, Aref Fathi, Mohsen Mir Mohseni, Mohammad Javaheri (Tehran University) and Mohammad Sharifi Moghadam Robabi (Sharif University).
